Was the reboot actually worth it? Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer reveals what he thought of the most recent Superman movie out of the DC Universe.
A lot of comparisons have been drawn between Man of Steel and 2025’s Superman. Both were attempts to start a much larger cinematic universe. Both sought to bring a fresh take of the hero’s story to the silver screen. And, oddly enough, both were directed by the creatives behind 2004’s Dawn of the Dead reboot.
Though despite how much vitriol there has been online, there seems to be no bad blood between the creatives of the two movies. James Gunn has been on record as being friends with Man of Steel director Zack Snyder, with the two even making a cameo alongside each other in an episode of Rick and Morty leading up to the release of Superman.
Man Of Steel’s Writer Speaks Out
And it seems that amicability even extends to David S. Goyer, who served as the writer for Man of Steel. The scribe recently spoke about his experience watching Superman during a talk with Cinemablend. Goyer reveals that he thoroughly enjoyed the movie, admitting that he’s happy to see the film receive the success that it has.
“I really liked it,” Goyer remarked. “People always assume that because I did The Dark Knight, I wouldn’t like The Batman, but I really enjoyed it. Each generation gets the Superman they need. It felt like the pendulum with Man of Steel, obviously that was a much darker grounded version, and, and we’re in a very different place, and I love that just the tagline that ‘Kindness is punk rock.’”
“I think that [David] Corenswet is incredibly appealing. I never would have thought to use Krypto, and Krypto was delightful…I love seeing a live action Metamorpho, and those are the kind of things that James Gunn can get away with”
“And God bless him because I love all these those weird quirky tertiary DC characters. I really enjoyed it and I was rooting for it, so I’m happy it’s been successful.”
Given how legendary David S. Goyer is as a comic book movie writer, his praise may be one of the highest a Superman reboot can get. The box office certainly reflects this, with the film soaring past $500 million, likely stopping just short of the billion dollar mark. Though, as a start to a franchise, that’s certainly better than Man of Steel.
