Margot Robbie has shared her thoughts on Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. announced that Lady Gaga has joined the cast of the upcoming Joker sequel, subtitled Folie à Deux. Gaga is set to star opposite Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix, with the singer-turned-actress taking on the role of Harley Quinn, the iconic love interest of The Joker. She is the second actress to play Harley Quinn in live-action after Margot Robbie.

Margot Robbie is looking forward to Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn

While doing the press rounds for her new movie Amsterdam, Margot Robbie spoke to MTV News and commented on Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn casting. Robbie experessed her excitement about seeing Gaga as the iconic DC Comics character in the Joker sequel.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, it’s all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way, like, Macbeth or Batman, always gets passed, you know, from great actor to great actor. And it’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman or someone gets to do their Macbeth or someone, you know?”

Margot Robbie later compared the situation to her casting as Queen Elizabeth I in 2018’s Mary Queen of Scots, as that role has also been played by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.

“And I feel like in not so many cases are they female characters. Queen Elizabeth I, but like beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow, Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.’ It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

Todd Phillips is directing Joker: Folie à Deux, working from a script he co-wrote alongside Scott Silver. The film’s cast also includes Brendan Gleeson and Zazie Beetz. Production is expected to begin this December for a October 2024 release.

Meanwhile, Margot Robbie’s future as Harley Quinn is currently a mystery. The character was last seen in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which underperformed at the box office as it was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic.
