Matt Reeves has big plans for The Batman!

The Batman universe just keeps getting bigger! Director Matt Reeves confirms plans for more spin-off series following the success of The Penguin.

The Batman took the internet by storm when it debuted back in 2022. Fans were hungry to see the grounded and gritty world of Gotham back on the silver screen, and Matt Reeves’ adaptation only left them hungry for more. The Penguin has made an equally big splash following its debut, with many wondering just how far the universe will be expanded in the coming years. If Reeves is to be believed, it seems there are plenty of more spin-offs to come.

“We have been talking, and it’s exciting because people are now embracing the show,” Reeves raved when speaking to Interview Magazine. “My fantasy is coming into being, which is very exciting, and HBO has been incredibly supportive from the beginning. Now to see that the show is being embraced is really, really exciting.”

“We have been talking about doing other shows. I wanted to make sure that we didn’t do the origin tale, which so many of the other series have done. I think the idea of being able to put a lens on these characters is a really exciting idea. It’s about cities and their dysfunction and the world and its dysfunction, which is what Batman stories are all about.”

“They’re all about Gotham being a place that should be better. And you can have the experience of this almost novelistic epic crime saga, but you also just get these separate experiences. They have their own dramatic value. So Oz’s story is Oz’s story, and the idea is to do these other stories in the same way.”

While Matt Reeves has previously spoken on talks he’s had about more spin-offs set in The Batman universe, it’s clear that the success of The Penguin has solidified these concepts into reality. The director declined to tease what characters could be joining Oz in getting their own solo projects. However, fans are already wild with speculation about who could be the next villain to land a starring role in an HBO series.

Who Will The Batman’s Next Spin-Off Focus On?

The only name addressed by Matt Reeves when it comes to the topic of spin-offs is Two-Face. When asked about the possibility of DA Harvey Dent getting his own show after The Penguin, he admitted that conversations have leaned toward that direction. While this doesn’t confirm that Two-Face will get his own series in The Batman universe, it certainly suggests characters like him are on the radar of Reeves and the rest of his team.

A few other characters that have been floated to helm their own spin-offs include Clayface, Mr. Freeze, and The Joker. Aside from The Joker, who previously was played by Barry Keoghan in The Batman, none of those villains have made their debut in Matt Reeves’ universe. This could dampen their chances given The Penguin built off the foundations laid by the first film. Yet if any of the above appear in the upcoming sequel to The Batman, it’s more likely than not that they’re up for consideration to helm their own series.

The Penguin is now streaming on HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
