Are the Court of Owls coming to the world of The Batman? Director Matt Reeves plays coy about the team’s role in his upcoming sequel.
The Batman presented a brand new approach to the Caped Crusader. While a grounded take on the character has been done before, Matt Reeves put a surprising amount of focus on one of the most oft-forgotten corners of Gotham’s criminal underbelly: their organized crime. And with The Penguin continuing the director’s focus on the city’s problems with corruption, many fans have assumed that the Court of Owls, DC’s cabal of corrupt secret society guiding Gotham’s history, are a shoe-in as the villains for the upcoming sequel.
Matt Reeves was approached directly about this idea during the promotional tour for The Penguin. Hollywood news outlet Showsha asked the director if there was a chance that the Court of Owls could appear in the The Batman‘s highly-anticipated sequel. Reeves played rather coy with his response admitting that, no matter what he said, he might accidentally reveal too much information about the film.
“We can’t comment on the movie because we are doing the movie,” Reeves explained during the interview. “And then you’d know what movie we’re doing and we’re not going to say that yet.”
Who Will Be The Villain In The Batman’s Sequel?
While the Court of Owls has been the most talked about option for The Batman‘s next villain, it’s not the only villain Matt Reeves could go with for the sequel. Early rumors point to a more grounded take on Clayface making his live-action debut in the project. However, the director’s recent comments about the film taking place in winter have gotten many fans wondering if Mr. Freeze could finally make his return to the silver screen
With The Batman being so focused on a grounded mystery, some fans have speculated that the sequel will once more focus on a string of murders, with Matt Reeves potentially saving the Court of Owls for the final installment in the trilogy. The most famous story the director could pull from in this vein would be The Long Halloween. However, the recent premiere of The Penguin suggests that the beloved storyline may have ended before it even began.
