Matt Reeves’ HBO Max series set in the world of The Batman will take place during the first year of Bruce Wayne’s crimefighting career.
Just before he dropped the incredible first trailer for The Batman, director Matt Reeves confirmed that his prequel HBO Max series will take place in the first year of Bruce Wayne emerging as a vigilante in Gotham City. The series was announced back in July and will examine police corruption and how organized crime as infected the department. The Batman prequel series is reportedly being referred to as Gotham Central, which fans will recognize from the comic series of the same name by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka.
The news came shortly after official stills from the film debuted online, showing what Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will look like in the new take on the Caped Crusader. During the DC FanDome panel, Matt Reeves explained the story in The Batman prequel will be told from one particular corrupt officer and will go “back to Batman Year One.” It’s not clear whether this means the Dark Knight will make an appearance in the series or if he’ll be referred to throughout, but clearly the world of the upcoming film will be explored even further.
“You start to see the story from the point of view of these corrupt cops, one in particular. The Gotham PD series will go into the corruption of the Gotham Police Department…it goes back to Batman Year One…we’ll see these characters from a perspective we’ve never seen before.”

Plot details for The Batman are being kept under lock and key, but we know that the project will revolve around Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector. The Batman will also feature the hero making use of his detective skills more than what we’ve seen before in previous iterations of the character. It is also expected to be the first installment to a new trilogy starring Pattinson as Batman.
Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
The Batman is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news regarding Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson and The Batman universe, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content.
