Is The Batman Part II finally on its way? Matt Reeves updated fans on why the sequel is taking so long as he confirmed a production start window.
Fans have been waiting three agonizingly long years for The Batman Part II. While the sequel was originally slated to release later this year, two delays have led it to be pushed back all the way to 2027. This caused the internet to go wild with speculation about the cause of these delays, from Matt Reeves and James Gunn beefing over Robert Pattinson’s role in the DC Universe to the project being quietly canceled due to the regime change.
The truth, as always, is much more simple. Matt Reeves let fans into the reason behind the delays to The Batman Part II during an interview at the Golden Globes red carpet celebrating Colin Farrell’s historic win for his role in The Penguin. The director remarked that his past year has been rather busy, potentially providing an answer as to why the sequel’s script has yet to be finished, as well as stakes his claim that filming will commence in 2025.
“There’s [been] a lot of stuff going on in my life in the last year or so and he’s been such a good friend. Such a beautiful man. I can tell you that we’re going to be shooting this year and that we’re excited about it.”
“I can’t really tell you anything about it except that we’re really excited. We’re continuing the story…I’m really excited to be making it, to get our cast back together, to get new people involved, and we’re really excited about it.”
The Batman Part II Gets A New Direction
Luckily, it seems that The Batman Part II isn’t taking so long to write for nothing. Continuing to speak on the sequel on the red carpet, Matt Reeves explained that the sequel does build off of the foundation laid in place by the first film. However, he hopes to be able to surprise plans with where that road takes them.
“What I’m excited about is I feel like we’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something that I hope people are going to be really surprised by.”
Details about The Batman Part II are being kept tightly under wraps (likely because not even James Gunn has the completed script). Speculation suggests that Matt Reeves may be adapting The Long Halloween for the highly-anticipated sequel, potentially leading into Dark Victory as a pseudo-adaptation of the Batman: Year One trilogy.
