Could Henry Cavill be returning to the DC Universe? Director Matthew Vaughn wants to make a brand new Elseworlds movie with Cavill returning as Superman.
There’s been a lot of talk about Matthew Vaughn directing a movie in the new DC Universe, with the director even meeting with DC Studios to discuss a potential project. However, it seems the story topping his list to adapt is the Elseworlds story Superman: Red Son, and he wants Henry Cavill to return to play the titular role.
“I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read,” Vaughn told the BroBible podcast. “And the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history…Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”
Superman: Red Son is an Elseworlds story that asks what the world would look like if Kal-El landed in the Soviet Union instead of Smallville. While comic was adapted in the animated DC Universe, Matthew Vaughn would be the first director to bring the character to the big screen. Given how much fans have been begging for Henry Cavill to return as the Man of Steel, this may be the perfect solution!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
