Fast and Furious 9 star Michelle Rodriguez confirmed that the team will head to space after all the jokes about the progression of the franchise.

There’s been plenty of jokes about the Fast and Furious franchise travelling to space as the logical next step for the high-octane action series starring Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, but it looks like Fast and Furious 9 will be literally out of this world. Back in July, Rodriguez’s co-star, Ludacris, teased the next film would feature some of the team going into space as they go up against John Cena’s Jakob. But during a recent interview on The Jess Cagle Show, Rodriguez herself accidentally confirmed the surprising news.

“Oh, no way. How did you guys find that out? See what happens? People start talking behind the scenes, man. When a movie doesn’t come out and forget about it, things get out. Nobody was supposed to know that!”

Although fans still have a while to wait for Fast and Furious 9 after it was delayed (like most blockbusters) because of the coronavirus, the news will at least keep audiences excited before the film finally arrives in theaters. Michelle Rodriguez also confirmed that her character, Letty, won’t get in on the space action, but that the women in the movie are given more screentime and more exploration this time around than in previous Fast and Furious films.

“I’m not lucky enough to hit space, but we did get a female writer and showed a lot of love, I think, on this one. Thanks to, you know, thanks to Justin Lin. We were able to, to find a little bit more attention and love for the girls in the movie. And so I’m really hopeful that that, that shows through in the final product.”

Here is the official synopsis for Vin Diesel’s Fast and Furious 9.

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, next year’s The Suicide Squad).

F9 sees the return of Justin Lin as director, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series when it transformed into a global blockbuster. The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tblisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.

Directed Justin Lin from a script written by Daniel Casey, Fast and Furious 9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Cardi B and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.

Fast and Furious 9 will be released in theaters on April 2, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the franchise and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
