Virgil Hawkins has been a fan-favorite DC Comics character ever since his hit Static Shock show in 2000. When asked if he or any other characters from the Milestone imprint would a part of the new DC Universe, James Gunn confirmed they would appear in some way.
Static and the Milestone imprint have had a rocky history with DC Comics films in recent years. A Static Shock film was confirmed to be in development back in 2020, with Michael B. Jordan on board as a producer. Aside from minor updates adding a writer and assuring fans the film was still coming, news about the film’s development has stalled in the public eye. When asked if Static, or any other Milestone character, would be appearing in the new DCU, Gunn gave a brief but promising answer to fans:
James Gunn’s comments leave things unclear on where, how or who will appear in the DC Universe. It’s possible we’ll only get one Static Shock film on HBO Max before Milestone is thrown into a vault. It’s equally possible we’ll get a whole Elseworlds universe in a similar vein to Matt Reeve’s The Batman featuring dozens of Milestone characters. While only time will tell what Virgil Hawkins’ fate will be in the new DCU, fans of the character can rest assured that the much-beloved corner of the DC multiverse will be far from ignored.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
