The mutant menace is here!

Is Peter Parker actually a mutant? A rumor for Spider-Man: Brand New Day teases that a freaky transformation may be the film’s true conflict.

The rumor mill for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been truly endless. Do you remember when every scooper claimed that Knull would be the villain? Since then there’s been dozens of reports featuring everyone from the Silver Samurai to Ghost Rider. Yet now it seems as though the film will be putting a much larger focus on connecting to the Mutant Saga than fans expected.

John Campea, a reporter known for getting reliable information on Spider-Man films (such as leaking the original image of Andrew Garfield in No Way Home), reveals that Spider-Man: Brand New Day may actually turn the hero into a mutant. Specifically, that the film seems to be a race in keeping him from transforming into a spider.

“In the vein of Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, we’re going to see Peter mutate into a spider being…literally mutating into a spider. One of the main things [about] this movie is them trying to race against the idea of how to prevent Peter from mutating totally.”

The Role Of Mutants In Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Though it seems Spider-Man’s transformation won’t be the only reason mutants are relevant in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Campea continues on that another mutant, Jean Grey, will be making an appearance in the film. However, she’ll also be hunted for the fact she’s a mutant, seemingly teeing up a key conflict heading into the Mutant Saga.

“This is gonna be setting up the anti-mutant thing, because Jean Grey is being hunted because she’s a mutant…it’s pre-Xavier School.”

This rumor seems to tie together quite a lot of loose ends when it comes to Spider-Man: Brand New Day: why were there so many reports about Jean Grey, what does Shathra (a character heavily tied to transformations and spider entities) keep getting brought up, and why does it keep getting teased as “dark”? Though, with the trailer likely around the corner, it’s likely the REAL truth will come out soon.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31st, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future!
