Natalie Portman addressed the post-credits scene for Thor: Love and Thunder and what it entails.

Marvel Studios’ newest film Thor: Love and Thunder is currently in its second weekend at the box office, and although critics and fans are relatively mixed on the film, it continues to do quite well financially. And as it approaches the end of its second weekend, some are still discussing the film’s post-credits scene, particularly in how it relates to the future of Natalie Portman as The Mighty Thor.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER POST-CREDITS SCENE SPOILERS BELOW.

At the emotional climax of the film, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is shown holding Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in his arms as she succumbs to her cancer after facing off against Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). She disappears, but the post-credits scene reveals her in Valhalla, in which she reunites with Heimdall (Idris Elba), whom welcomes her.

Some have debated over this post-credits scene, speculating as to whether or not this confirms that Natalie Portman’s time in the MCU is officially over since we see Mighty Thor at Valhalla, signifying her death. However, in an interview with the D23 Inside Disney Podcast, Portman pondered over her future with the franchise. “It certainly feels like anything is possible,” but she also claims that she has “no insight into the answer to that.”

Perhaps it’s best that this film serves as Natalie Portman’s sendoff from the MCU, giving Jane Foster proper closure after her near decade-long absence from the franchise. Sure, some of how Mighty Thor’s story in Thor: Love and Thunder is a bit messy, but it really hits home in the emotional aspect towards the end of the film.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
