Is Guy Gardner exactly who the world needs right now? Nathan Fillion set the internet ablaze with a new ad for Superman promoting the only bowl fans need on Super Bowl Sunday.
One of the biggest gags fans have had regarding the production and promotion of Superman is the fact that Nathan Fillion was cast as Guy Gardner in the DC Universe. Fillion has been in almost every project James Gunn has made, so it’s not surprising that he found his way into the film. However, given how iconic and popular the character of Guy Gardner is, and the tendency to depict him as a young hot head in prior adaptations, many found it odd that the actor chosen to play him was over 50-years-old.
These jabs became even more prevalent when the first trailer for Superman came out. It gave fans their first proper look at the bowl cut that Nathan Fillion would be rocking in the DC Universe. It’s a costuming decision so heavily mocked that even former Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver called the look a “humiliation”. The negative reaction to the character left many to wonder if the character’s presence might be toned down for future promotional materials.

Yet as James Gunn is apt to do, he simply doubled down on the weird haircut jokes. A new ad was released to help promote Superman during Super Bowl Sunday starring Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. It puts the focus squarely on the Green Lantern’s dopey haircut, stating that the bowl cut is the only “bowl” that he needs.

Reactions to the ad have been mixed. Some fans have leaned into the bowl cut as being a cartoonish over exaggeration of Guy Gardner’s fashion sensibilities in the comics. Others are confused at who this type of marketing is even for, especially when so much of the film is still unknown. There’s certainly a lot that isn’t clear about Superman, but there is one thing that seems certain: James Gunn is loud and proud about his choice to cast Nathan Fillion as the iconic Green Lantern.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
