New ‘Spawn’ Film Aims For 2025 Release Date At Blumhouse

Will Spawn rise again!?

BlumHouse Spawn

A Spawn reboot starring Jamie Foxx has been stuck in development hell at Blumhouse Productions for years. Blumhouse chief Jason Blum reveals the film is very close to beginning production, teasing a 2025 release.

Todd McFarlane confirmed a new Spawn film was in development way back in 2016, though only a handful of details have come out since then. It’s been confirmed that Jamie Foxx is attached to star as the titular Al Simmons and that the movie is going to lean more into the horror aspect of the series rather than the superhero parts of previous adaptations. Fans also know the film has been in development at Blumhouse Productions since 2017, with McFarlane himself directing.

The last update given on the upcoming Spawn film was in October of last year when Todd McFarlane confirmed that the script was being rewritten by Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matthew Mixon. When asked if there was any update on the film entering production, Blumhouse chief Jason Blum confirmed it is in very active development, but an unfinished script will likely delay the film to 2025, if not beyond:

“I would say you have a lot to hope for because it’s in very very active development,” Blum told ComicBook.com. “What needs to happen is that my fellow friends the writers and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but we’ve got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie — my prediction is maybe we’ll actually see a Spawn movie in ’25. No promises, but that’s my prediction.”

Without a finished script, almost nothing can be done in terms of pre-production on a film, especially one as CGI intensive as Spawn is likely to be. If the WGA writer’s strike does continue, as it seems to have no obvious sign of stopping, it may be possible that Blumhouse Productions will have to push the film back even further to 2026 or beyond.

The Joker Effect on Spawn

Jamie Foxx compared the upcoming Spawn reboot to the Joker movie back in August 2022, long before the two films shared a writer. “It starts in a way that’s so cool, and it’s not big budgeted. It’s sort of like how when they did Joker. The Joker yes is here, but the story about this man who is on fire is the same with what we’re doing with this,” Foxx said at the time.

Here is the synopsis for the 1997 Spawn film:

How can you fight for right in a world so steeped in evil? How can you protect those you love most from all that can do them harm? A man trapped between life and death is struggling to save the lives of his most beloved as the cloak and chains of Spawn explode onto the screen in a deadly tornado of untapped, unwrapped, merciless power.

Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippe and co-written by Alan B. McElroy, Spawn starred Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Theresa Randle, Nicol Williamson, and D. B. Sweeney.

Spawn is available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital formats. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming reboot and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
