Is Lex Luthor actually in the right? Nicholas Hoult gives his thoughts on why the World’s Smartest Man despises Superman in the DC Universe.
Lex Luthor and Superman is one of the greatest rivalries, not just in the DC Universe, but in fictional history. The idea of the smartest and most capable human throwing down with a nearly limitless alien for the soul of humanity is one that is engaging to audiences at their very core. This iconic rivalry is set to return to the silver screen this summer, with Nicholas Hoult playing the Apex Capitalist and David Corenswet playing the Man of Steel.
Yet in spite of Nicholas Hoult playing the DC Universe’s first villain, he’s been almost entirely absent from marketing for Superman. His motivations, his abilities, and even his speaking voice have been kept tightly under wraps. It’s clear that there are big plans in store for Lex Luthor in the project, especially as he seems to be the center of one of the film’s biggest mysteries.
Lex Luthor’s Motivation In Superman
Luckily for fans, Nicholas Hoult made his first proper panel appearance during his visit to Orlando to attend Megacon this past weekend. During his chat, he was asked on why he thinks Lex Luthor is right to oppose Superman. While Hoult picked his words carefully to avoid the snipers of the DC Universe trying to keep spoilers under wraps, he did reveal a core fear at the heart of the character.
“If someone had ultimate power and the ability to do anything, then what happens when what he does doesn’t align with everyone’s belief of what is right?”
This is a fear prevalent in almost every adaptation of Lex Luthor in some form. So while it doesn’t tell us much about how Nicholas Hoult will be making the character his own in the DC Universe, it does show that the century spanning rivalry is alive and well in the next incarnation of the characters. Though while a relief to hear, it would be nice to see it in a trailer sometime soon!
