Nicolas Cage Was Approached To Play Superman In ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’

Crisis on Infinite Earths showrunner Marc Guggenheim confirmed Nicolas Cage was approached about playing Superman in the crossover.

The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover will follow the comic on which it’s based by uniting multiple version of DC’s heroes on a mission to protect the Multiverse from being destroyed. Joining Crisis on Infinite Earths will be a handful of actors who have portrayed Superman over the years, including Brandon Routh, Tyler Hoechlin, and Tom Welling.

However, Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim recently caught the attention of fans with a Twitter post where he suggested Nicolas Cage was approached to play Superman in the crossover as well. While it was unclear if Guggenheim was joking at the time, the Crisis on Infinite Earths showrunner confirmed to Indiewire that they did indeed reach out to Nicolas Cage to see if he would play Superman in the crossover, though the fan-favorite actor is one of the many performers who won’t be appearing for various reasons:

“I actually did … we did reach out to Nic Cage. I’ll tell you one thing, we reached out to a lot of people, and there were people who didn’t want to do it. There were people who would only do it for amounts of money that we could not ever afford. And there were other people who really wanted to do it, but couldn’t for scheduling. That was the case with a lot of, I have to say, the movie stars that we reached out to. The thing about movie stars is, they’re all shooting movies. But I have to say that the sheer number of actors that we did end up getting exceeded my expectation.

For those who may not be familiar, Nicolas Cage was officially tapped to play the Man of Steel in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives during the ’90s. The project was eventually scrapped, but photos taken during screen tests with Nicolas Cage in the Superman costume have since surfaced online.
