Is Spider-Woman joining Sony's Marvel Universe?

Amongst Sony’s slate of upcoming Spider-Man spin-offs is a film being directed by Olivia Wilde, rumored to be Spider-Woman, but the director is giving nothing away about her Marvel project.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe kicked off with Tom Hardy’s Venom in 2018 and its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This year, Jared Leto’s Morbius was added to the mix, though it was not as well received by Marvel fans.

Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web are currently in the works alongside a project from Olivia Wilde. While Wilde’s film is widely believed to be Spider-Woman, she won’t confirm anything just yet.

Is Olivia Wilde Directing Spider-Woman?

While speaking to Variety, Olivia Wilde opened up about the experience of working on a Marvel movie, but refused to confirm whether her current Sony project was indeed Spider-Woman.

As Spider-Man looks set to remain a part of the MCU, where he is being played by Tom Holland, for the time being, Sony may be looking to Spider-Woman as an alternative central hero for their Spider-Man Universe. With Madame Web rumored to be a team-up between multiple female spider-themed heroes, it would make sense to see it followed up by Spider-Woman.

When asked about her Sony Marvel project, Olivia Wilde said:

“That, I can’t say a word about. Yeah, no — I can’t say anything about it. I have to bury myself in the couch now.

“I will say that I think the Marvel approach of allowing newer filmmakers to come into the fold and have access to those tools of the Marvel universe is incredibly exciting. I am a big fan of what they’re doing over there, but, yeah, I can’t confirm whether that is what that is. But that would be cool.”

Wilde is clearly letting nothing slip about her Marvel project, bound by the strict anti-spoiler policies that surround such movies. However, given Madame Web’s status as more of a guiding mystic than an outright hero, if Wilde’s project is Spider-Woman, it would mark the first standalone entry in Sony’s universe of live-action Spider-Man spin-offs to be based on an actual Marvel superhero.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s most recent Marvel film, Morbius:

“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.”

Directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach produced the project with Lucas Foster, with Palak Patel overseeing it for Sony.

Morbius is available on all home media formats, while Madame Web will hit theaters on October 6, 2023. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news regarding Madame Web, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
