A surprising new clue in the mystery surrounding Paul Dano’s The Riddler has been uncovered following the first look at The Batman.

It’s unsurprising that fans quickly analyzed every single frame of The Batman trailer after it arrived at DC FanDome, but an intriguing new detail about Paul Dano’s The Riddler was unearthed by DC Comics artist Nick Derington. Many fans online instantly drew comparisons from the trailer to David Fincher’s films like Seven and Zodiac mainly because this new take on The Riddler leans heavily into the serial killer version of the villain. However, a new detail suggests Dano’s character might have military ties.

DC Comics artist Nick Derington, best known for his work on Batman Universe and Doom Patrol, took to Twitter to explain he recognized the mask Paul Dano is wearing in the trailer from The Batman. The artist revealed it’s a version of a “US Military Extreme Cold Weather Mask.” It’s an interesting reference, since many fans understandably assumed the villain as wearing a duct-tape mask. It’s not clear if this means The Riddler will be ex-military or have some military ties in the film. Take a look at the mask below.

What do you think about this detail about Paul Dano’s The Riddler? Do you think he’s ex-military? Are you excited to see The Batman? What did you make of the first trailer? Sound-off in the comments below!

Plot details for The Batman are being kept under lock and key, but we know that the project will revolve around Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector. The Batman will also feature the hero making use of his detective skills more than what we’ve seen before in previous iterations of the character. It is also expected to be the first installment to a new trilogy starring Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news regarding Zack Snyder and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content.
