Superman has some super journalism! Rachel Brosnahan teases an evolution for Lois Lane in the new age of internet news and misinformation.

It’s no secret that journalism isn’t what it used to be. It seems almost everywhere that anyone looks these days, an outlet is being sold off or goes out of business. Those that remain are often criticized for not covering the stories that matter. This has led many to wonder how Superman will adapt Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, given how closely the character is tied to the struggling industry.

Much like everything else to come out of Superman, things are looking bright. Rachel Brosnahan spoke on how the character is being adapted for the silver screen during a recent press event attended by ComicBook.com. The actress revealed that she’s always loved Lois Lane, and was excited to continue the emotional and ideological threads that exist throughout every incarnation of the character.

“I’ve always been inspired by this character. She’s somebody who is ambitious and courageous and hungry and determined to get the greatest story almost at any cost. I’ve always loved this character and was so excited by the opportunity to bring all of those things that have been true of her in every iteration.”

Lois Lane’s Evolution In Superman

Yet the more things stay the same, the more things change. Rachel Brosnahan continued that, even though Lois Lane will be the same character she had always been in Superman, her details evolve with the era. In particular, this upcoming film will tackle how the insatiable reporter handles her job in a world where the profession is in an almost endangered state.

“One of the things I love about this character is that almost more than any other character in these comics, and in the movies, she evolves to fit what it would mean to be an intrepid journalist of each generation or each decade that she’s presented in.”

“So, I think our challenge… Today we’re living in a world where print journalism to some is perhaps an endangered art form and she’s somebody who has dedicated her entire life to it.”

“I think as far as what else is different, you’ll have to check out the movie to see, but I love that she’s somebody who doesn’t understand what the word ‘no’ means and it’s motivating for her. We definitely see that side of her in this film.”

The key sauce in any Superman adaptation has been fitting timeless characters into the time period they’re in. Every era presents unique challenges that characters like Lois Lane and Clark Kent speak to, so keeping the core true and the issues current allows the heroes to resonate even in a world where journalism isn’t respected nearly as much as it used to be.
