Robert Downey Jr. is finally giving his thoughts about his return! The Iron Man actor has released a new social media post teasing his new role as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The entire internet was shocked when it was revealed that San Diego Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. would be making his return to the MCU. However, he wouldn’t be playing Iron Man. Rather, the actor would be playing the iconic Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. This would come alongside him headlining the next crossover film Avengers: Doomsday.
Robert Downey Jr. has taken to social media to celebrate the occasion. The actor posted pictures of himself with the Doctor Doom mask in his car on the way to the Avengers: Doomsday reveal. This came with a caption speaking on his MCU return and giving up the role of Iron Man, stating “New Mask, Same Task.”
Why Is Iron Man Playing Doctor Doom?
Surprisingly, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t a hail-mary attempt by the MCU to salvage Avengers: Doomsday after a string of controversies. Doctor Doom actually took up the mantle of Iron Man in the comics all the way back in 2016 with the release of Infamous Iron Man #1, which seems to be where Marvel is taking inspiration from this decision.
However, Avengers: Doomsday may be flipping this dynamic on its head. The caption “New Mask, Same Task” implies that Doctor Doom will be sharing Iron Man’s mission in the MCU. Namely: to stop the fight. Perhaps Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom comes from a world wrought with chaos, and now he plans to bring peace to the entire multiverse.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters in May, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
