Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Is ‘On The Back Burner’ Says Director

It'll be a while before we see Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law team-up for the third film.

Dexter Fletcher revealed the unsurprising reason why Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes 3 has yet to start production.

After the first two Sherlock Holmes films starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law became some of the highest grossing films in director Guy Ritchie’s career – a third outing for the Dynamic Duo was seemingly on the cards. However the series has stalled over the last few years and although Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher was brought on for the third film, production has yet to begin. And since it currently has a release date of December 22, 2021 that doesn’t give the team much time to get started.

Director Dexter Fletcher recently appeared on the Celebrity Catch Up podcast series and offered an unsurprising reason why work on Robert Downey Jr.’s third Sherlock Holmes film has come to a halt. He explained that at the moment, it’s on the “back burner” while the ongoing pandemic continues to cause havoc for the film and TV industry.

“Sherlock’s hit its own issues on and off. That’s sort of sitting on the back burner at the moment until it becomes clear where the world is at and what’s going to happen.”

Do you want to see Robert Downey Jr.’s legendary detective return in the sequel? Where do you think the story should go next? Sound-off in the comments below!

Here’s the synopsis for Sherlock Holmes:

When a string of brutal murders terrorizes London, it doesn’t take long for legendary detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his crime-solving partner, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), to find the killer, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong). A devotee of the dark arts, Blackwood has a bigger scheme in mind, and his execution plays right into his plans. The game is afoot when Blackwood seems to rise from the grave, plunging Holmes and Watson into the world of the occult and strange technologies.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, Eddy Marsan, Robert Maillet, Geraldine James and Hans Matheson.
