Hellboy star Ron Perlman has revealed why he did not reprise the role for the 2019 reboot despite being offered the chance.
The Hellboy film franchise may have one of the most tragic stories in movie history. The first two films were directed by Guillermo del Toro with the second film in particular often coming up on lists of one of the greatest comic book films ever made. Sadly films were not the biggest money makers and, as the director became more involved in other projects, the plans for a third film gradually evaporated.
The role of Hellboy would ultimately be recast with Stranger Things star David Harbour taking over Ron Perlman’s role for the 2019 reboot. Unfortunately, the film was beset by behind the scenes drama and was ultimately savaged by critics and failed at the box office. But, as it turned out, Ron Perlman had the opportunity to reprise the role for the 2019 reboot.
While speaking to Comic Book Movie.com Ron Perlman discussed the third Hellboy film and why it hasn’t happened yet. He also revealed that he had the opportunity to be involved in the 2019 reboot but opted to walk away since del Toro would not be a part of it:
“The only thing that’s stopping the third Hellboy film is the fact that Guillermo [del Toro] is one of the busiest guys in the business. He couldn’t do it with all the stuff he’s got lined up even if wanted to. The two films had nothing to do with one another.
The reboot was something I had the opportunity to participate in and decided that the only version of Hellboy I’m interested in is the one I do with Guillermo and so in walking away from it, I truly walked away from it, and haven’t seen it or heard much about it. I wished them well, but it was not in my bailiwick.”
