Could The Acolyte have actually gotten a season 2? A new rumor suggests Lucasfilm had already started work on the Star Wars series before the series was cancelled.
One of the most heartbreaking pieces of news to come out of Star Wars in recent weeks was the announcement that The Acolyte would not be coming back for season 2. While the show was far from perfect and had received backlash from certain segments of the fanbase, fans believed that Lucasfilm was setting up something truly great with the series.
That setup may have been more than just wishful thinking. According to insider John Rocha, Lucasfilm had already given a “soft greenlight” to The Acolyte for season 2. This reportedly recruited assembling a writers’ room for the Star Wars series back in February 2024 and starting to query directors to helm the episodes pending their availability.
The Dismal State Of Star Wars On Disney Plus
At one time, Disney Plus was held as the bastion for Star Wars content when the films were disappointing fans. However, it seems Lucasfilm has turned its back on the original storytelling that made the streaming service so good. Along with The Acolyte not coming back for season 2, The Mandalorian is shifting to the big screen in 2026, and other shows like The Book of Boba Fett don’t have much hope for a follow-up.
It’s unclear why Lucasfilm is taking this approach to Star Wars on Disney Plus, especially since they seemed so confident in giving The Acolyte a season 2 earlier this year. It’s possible new leadership at Disney is influencing priorities for the studio. Then again, it’s also possible the online backlash combined with low viewership was the death knell for the series.
