The Russo Brothers have revealed that Jon Favreau argued against killing off Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.
Way back in 2008, Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man. While the film had a number of behind-the-scenes scripting issues it was nonetheless a hit with audiences and critics. Jon Favreau went on to direct Iron Man 2 before stepping back into an executive producer role for the larger MCU.
A few years later, The Russo Brothers joined the MCU as the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The two returned to helm its direct sequel, Captain America: Civil War before moving up to Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers Endgame. The last of these films saw Iron Man sacrifice himself to defeat Thanos and his forces. As it turned out, Jon Favreau was against this idea.
In a recent interview with Variety, The Russo Brothers revealed that after seeing the script Jon Favreau called them with Anthony Russo revealed that he ask if they were serious:
“Part of the pressure came from Jon Favreau, who called us up after he read the script and said to us, ‘Are you guys really going to kill Iron Man?'”
Joe Russo then revealed exactly how Jon Favreau reacted to the news that Iron Man was going to die.
And I remember pacing on the corner of the stage on the phone with Favreau trying to talk him off a ledge cause he’s like, ‘You can’t do this, it’s gonna devastate people. You don’t want them walking out of the theater and into traffic. We did it anyway.”
