Following the film’s release on the streaming service, Netflix has confirmed that a sequel and a spin-off for Ryan Gosling’s The Gray Man are now in the works.
With Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in lead roles and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame directors the Russo brothers at the helm, The Gray Man had all the makings of a hit. It should come as no surprise, then, that Netflix is already planning to build on the film’s story.
Netflix has revealed that a sequel is now in development, once again with the Russo brothers directing and working alongside their production company, AGBO. Details of the spin-off are under wraps, but it will be penned by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese and rated R.
Ryan Gosling Returns As The Gray Man
Ryan Gosling is set to return for the sequel to The Gray Man, which will be written by Stephen McFeeley, who co-wrote the first film with his Avengers: Endgame writing partner Christopher Markus.
The spin-off is set to be “a little more edgy and experimental” than the first film, according to The Gray Man co-director Joe Russo, earning its “hard R” rating. The spin-off will continue to draw on the book series by Mark Greaney, which was the inspiration behind the first film.
The Gray Man debuted as the #1 movie in 92 countries this weekend and earned an audience score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s $200 million budget made it Netflix’s most expensive movie ever and the investment appears to have paid off.
It is not yet clear if the Russo brothers will also be directing the Gray Man spin-off, though as it is being produced by AGBO, they will presumably still be involved in some capacity. While Ryan Gosling is returning for the sequel, it is also not yet known whether he will be involved with the spin-off.
Here is the synopsis for the Netflix film:
“THE GRAY MAN is CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.”
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura and Alfre Woodard.
