Is Ryan Reynolds hanging up the spandex for good? The actor gives an honest look about his future as Deadpool in this new era of the Marvel multiverse.
Deadpool and Wolverine was truly a celebration of Marvel’s old guard. It served as the perfect sendoff to dozens of amazing cameos, while also leaving the door open to a brighter future. However, when asked about what he sees as his future, the film’s star Ryan Reynolds admits he isn’t sure if he has one when it comes to playing Deadpool.
“I would say that Shawn [Levy] and I have been pretty clear,” Reynolds told Collider in a recent interview. “I think, in the most loving way, because talk about the greatest uptown problem any human beings could have is a studio like that saying, ‘What’s next?’ Or ‘How can we make something else?’ But this movie was made as a complete experience.”
“It wasn’t meant to be a commercial for another movie. It wasn’t meant to be any of that stuff. And, I think I get a great deal of joy making a movie like that. But honestly, right in this moment, I have no idea if I’ll ever wear that Deadpool suit again — I hope I do — but I don’t know. Right now’s the time to just kind of hang it up for a bit and see what happens next.”
It’s good to hear that Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy weren’t crafting Deadpool and Wolverine as a secret way for them to take over the Marvel universe. However, given the numbers that the movie is doing at the box office, it’s more likely than not that the studio is already trying to find a spot for the Merc with a Mouth in their universe, whether Reynolds planned for it or not!
Ryan Reynolds’ Future As Deadpool
While Ryan Reynolds says that he has no idea if he’ll ever put on the suit as Deadpool again, there are some pretty clear paths for the actor to take after Deadpool and Wolverine. Given the film’s success with the multiverse, it’s almost guaranteed that the character will at least be making a cameo in the next Avengers films, even if it stops short of a complete return.
Beyond that, it’s likely Ryan Reynolds will saddle up for a proper Deadpool 3 somtime in the future. Deadpool and Wolverine was a fun side venture, but there’s plenty of loose threads in the Merc’s personal life to clean up if he ever was to return to the silver screen. Namely: what the hell happened to Domino and Cable!?
