Original Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi has commented on Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, and Alfred Molina’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the return of numerous iconic villains, including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus. Both stars first appeared as their respective villains in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, which was spearheaded by star Tobey Maguire. Audiences all over the world rejoiced when the trio returned for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also brought in a variety of characters from The Amazing Spider-Man films.
It wasn’t just audiences who were elated, however, as Sam Raimi also got swept into the excitement of seeing his original characters return to the big screen. In a chat with Variety, Raimi opened up about seeing Tobey Maguire reprise his role as Spider-Man, as well as what it was like to see Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe share the big screen as bad guys.
“It was so much fun. I love ‘No Way Home’ and the audience I was with went crazy. It was delightful to watch Alfred play his role, and Willem Dafoe, just seeing these guys take it to the next level. And Tobey was awesome as always. The best word I can say is it was refreshing for me.”
Sam Raimi’s next project is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is currently in post-production. Coincidentally, Spider-Man: No Way Home directly segues into Raimi’s Doctor Strange sequel, which sees the good doctor trying to navigate the chaos of the multiverse.
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Marvel’s No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy.
