Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson opened up about Natasha Romanoff’s heartbreaking sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame.

Although it’s not yet clear if Marvel Studios’ Black Widow will get delayed once again following the disappointing commercial reception for Tenet, Scarlett Johansson recently spoke to Total Film about the upcoming film and how it fits nicely into Natasha Romanoff’s story arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, fans are still concerned that the solo film might undo some of the emotional and dramatic weight that the super-spy’s sacrifice had in Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson recently appeared on the stunning cover of Total Film magazine and spoke to the outlet about the upcoming movie. The actress explained that she thinks Natasha’s choice in was “very in-character” before going on to say that the spy always knew that was her destiny. Johansson also pointed out that every appearance from Black Widow in the MCU has led to that sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame.

“I love Natasha. She’s had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice. It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She’s made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that’s her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way. When you look back on the films, that’s in there. All the films have led her to that choice – or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice.”
