Does Scarlett Johansson still have bad blood with Disney? The Black Widow star talks about her previous lawsuit against the House of Mouse.
It almost feels like a lifetime ago that studios were getting into legal battles over films going direct to streaming while theaters were shut down during the pandemic. From Tenet to Mulan, these discussions were almost unavoidable for a time. Though perhaps the biggest of all of them involved Scarlett Johansson taking Disney to task over Black Widow.
Back in 2021, Disney decided to put out Black Widow under their Disney Plus Premier Access section, which would allow users of the service to pay an extra fee to watch the film at home during release day. This irked Scarlett Johansson, whose contract mandated the film be released in theaters. Johansson would take the company to court, stating that the move to streaming caused the loss of millions in backend compensation to her and other stars.
Does Scarlett Johansson Still Hate Disney?
While the lawsuit would eventually be settled out of court, fans were still left wondering if the Black Widow star would ever be able to bridge the gap created between her and Disney. When asked about the legal battle and how she felt looking back, Johansson admitted that she isn’t one to hold a grudge when it comes to these types of things.
“I don’t hold a grudge,” Johansson told Variety in a recent statement. “I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ‘You have to act.’”
This makes sense, given Scarlett Johansson is already said to be in talks with Disney to develop an upcoming Marvel series. While it’s not likely the actress will be returning to the role of Black Widow anytime soon, the idea that her decade-long tenure could have been left on such a bad note is a possibility that was best avoided.
