Scarlett Johansson Comments On Potential Black Widow Return In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Is Black Widow back?

Is Avengers: Doomsday assembling the original cast? Scarlett Johansson breaks silence on if she’ll be making one final return as Black Widow.

Black Widow has had a complex history in the MCU. Despite Scarlett Johansson being one of the longest-serving actors in the franchise, studio politics kept the character from getting her own movie until after she had died. The movie itself was mired in controversy due to releasing during the pandemic, with many assuming that the bridge was officially burnt for any potential return in a future Avengers project.

Yet with Avengers: Doomsday bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, all eyes have shifted to Scarlett Johansson to see if she’ll be making a return as well. After all, with both Downey and Evans appearing in the MCU after their deaths, it would only make sense for Black Widow to take one final ride. However, it seems as though the actress is less gung-ho about the prospect than fans would hope she would be.

“It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” Johansson explained to Vanity Fair. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too – it’s important for them”

Is Black Widow In Avengers: Doomsday?

Notably, that isn’t a “no” from Scarlett Johansson about the potential for her to return in Avengers: Doomsday. Given how often actors flat out lie and say they won’t be appearing in projects throughout the MCU, this quote is the closest fans have ever gotten to actual confirmation a hero will return. However, it’s important to note that nothing is for certain. Even though the bridge between Johansson and the studio has mended after Black Widow, it’s likely those considerations are always in the back of both parties’ minds.

It’s also important to note that she says that she doesn’t see a way forward for the specific character of Black Widow that she played for over a decade. If rumors about Avengers: Doomsday are true, that concern wouldn’t be applicable to the capacity in which she would return. Though, as with any amount of speculation with the MCU, nothing is set in stone until the film is in theaters.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
