Secret Invasion is set to debut in just under a week on Disney Plus. However, it seems as though Samuel L. Jackson’s return as Nick Fury isn’t as well-loved as Marvel may have hoped, receiving the lowest Rotten Tomatoes critics score ahead of its release.
Marvel Studios recently gave a number of critics and outlets access to two episodes of Secret Invasion ahead of its Disney Plus debut next week. Early reviews seem to come out mixed, with the Nick Fury-focused series receiving the lowest score of any Marvel series at a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes out of 39 reviews.
This puts Secret Invasion even below She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which continues to sit at an 80% critics score despite audience scorn. Many reviews cite their distaste at the show’s slow start and lack of pizzazz in departments such as visuals. Of course, 72% is by no means a terrible score, with nearly 3 out of 4 critics enjoying the project, but it may spell trouble for audiences once the series makes its official debut.
How Marvel is adapting Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, which was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu . The story revolves around a group of Skrulls, an alien race that has the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance of anyone they want. The Skrulls have infiltrated Earth’s society and are secretly replacing key figures with their own kind in order to take over the planet.
The full Secret Invasion cast also includes Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Olivia Colman, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo and Charlayne Woodard are also on board in undisclosed roles.
