Secret Invasion is set to feature the return of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Maria Hill in her biggest role yet. According to actress Cobie Smulders, its also the project that gives Hill the most depth.
Despite appearing in five films and a few episodes of the highly underrated Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Maria Hill hasn’t been much more than just another agent int he MCU. Given she commonly stars alongside large casts of actors in the Avengers series, it’s no shock that she has only played a supporting role up to this point. Luckily for fans of the character, Secret Invasion appears to be her big break, with Cobie Smulders saying that it’s the most depth she’s been able to bring to the character:
“It’s the most depth I’ve been able to show of Maria Hill,” she tells TVLine. “That’s the beauty of these series that Marvel is doing, you’re able to really get backstory of these characters. What are the conversations that happen when they’re just sitting around drinking coffee? It’s not like, ‘We’ve gotta get the bad guys! We’ve gotta get the thing! We’ve gotta save the world again!’ It’s like, ‘Let’s just have a chat, let’s go for a walk.’ We get to see those kinds of moments and be a bit more intimate with the characters.”
Maria Hill has largely served as the right-hand woman to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury ever since Phil Coulson died in Avengers. While fans will likely never see her take a leading role as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. like in he comics, Secret Invasion serves as the obvious project for Cobie Smulders to stretch her dramatic chops as the character due to the tension of Fury not knowing who to trust as the Skrulls unveil their threat to destroy humanity.
How Marvel is adapting Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, which was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu . The story revolves around a group of Skrulls, an alien race that has the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance of anyone they want. The Skrulls have infiltrated Earth’s society and are secretly replacing key figures with their own kind in order to take over the planet.
The full Secret Invasion cast also includes Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Olivia Colman, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo and Charlayne Woodard are also on board in undisclosed roles.
