During a recent exchange with a fan, Shazam! director David F. Sandberg explained his reluctance to do a sequel to his upcoming film.

During the exchange, a fan expressed sorrow over the fact that both Sandberg and Aquaman director James Wan were both hesitant to return to the DC Universe. The fan tagged both directors in the post but seemed to understand their decisions. The Shazam! director then explained why he wasn’t entirely in love with the idea of returning to the franchise.

He explained that it takes a crazy amount of work to do a film like this. He compared it to asking a marathon runner to do another one immediately after finishing the first one. They have to take a minute to forget how difficult it was.

You can see the Shazam! director’s full explanation below:

From the look of things, the long-term future of DC may hang in the balance.

What do you all make of Sandberg’s comments? Would you rather wait and see how Shazam! turns out before Warner Bros. hands him another sequel? Are you a fan of the director’s previous work? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
