‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Director Discusses ‘Black Adam’ Crossover Movie

When can fans expect to see Shazam take on Black Adam?

David F. Sandberg, director of the upcoming DC movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods, has commented on the hotly anticipated Shazam! crossover with Black Adam.

In DC’s comics, Shazam and Black Adam are arch-enemies. Shazam was recently introduced to the DCEU, played by Chuck star Zachary Levi, in 2019’s Shazam!. The sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes out later this year, as does Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Despite the two enemies each getting their own live-action franchises in the DCEU, DC is yet to announce any plans for a crossover movie.

Shazam Vs Black Adam?

David F. Sandberg, who has directed both DCEU Shazam! movies, recently spoke to Collider about the possibility of a Shazam/Black Adam crossover.

While it may seem as though a meeting between the two characters is DC’s inevitable destination, it sounds like no plans for such a crossover have actually been made. At the very least, Sandberg has not been party to any such discussions.

This may indicated that DC wants to see how Black Adam performs before making plans for the character’s cinematic future, or simply that they have not yet considered having Dwayne Johnson’s Teth-Adam face off with Zachary Levi’s Shazam.

Speaking about the potential for a crossover between the two DC properties, David F. Sandberg said:

“There hasn’t really been a conversation about that. I know, at the moment, Black Adam is sort of its thing and Shazam! is its thing. Then we’ll see where it all goes in the future, but I haven’t really been a part of any conversations like that.”

It appears that DC is reluctant to commit to building up their cinematic universe in the way that Marvel has done. While this may in part be due to the current reorganizing of Warner Bros. Discovery, DC’s parent company, DC Films also appears to be more cautious in their approach to crossovers and big event movies following a bit of a hit-and-miss track record.

Here is the synopsis for Black Adam:

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script written by by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, the DCEU film stars Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan.

Black Adam opens in theaters on October 21, 2022, while Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens on December 21, 2022.
