Four months after dominating headlines for all the wrong reasons, Will Smith has shared an emotional video apologizing for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Will Smith took home the Best Actor award at this year’s Oscars, but his most memorable moment of the night came when he took to the stage to slap host Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Now, the King Richard star has addressed the incident in a video shared with his fans online.
Will Smith Reaches Out To Chris Rock
In a video shared on YouTube, Will Smith has answered questions people had about the Oscars slap incident and offered up words of apology to Chris Rock and his family.
In the video, Smith confirmed he had “reached out to Chris and the message that came back is he’s not ready to talk, and when he is, he will reach out.” He apologized to Chris Rock, saying “Chris, I apologize to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
The actor also addressed rumors that his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the subject of Rock’s jokes, had told him to take to the stage. Will Smith denied these rumors, saying “I made a choice, on my own, from my own experiences, from my history with Chris. Jada had nothing to do with it.” He went on to apologize to his wife and children “for the heat that I brought on all of us.”
Will Smith also apologized to his fellow Oscar nominees, particularly singling out Questlove, during whose award the slap happened. “‘I’m sorry’ really isn’t sufficient,” Smith said.
He wrapped up the video by addressing fans who felt let down by his actions, saying “I know it was confusing, I know it was shocking, but I promise you, I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world. And, you know, if you hang on, I promise we’ll be able to be friends again.”
