Based off of the first images and trailers for the upcoming movie Shazam!, it appears that the upcoming project which stars Zachary Levi as the original Captain Marvel will be a more lighthearted and fun exploration of not just the DC Extended Universe but also magic in and of itself. At least, that’s what Geoff Johns is describing it as.
Johns, who was behind the New 52 take on Shazam, which the upcoming movie is said to be primarily based on, recently had an interview with IGN where he discussed how his upcoming monthly comic series on the character explores the fun side of magic – which could be indicative of what director David F. Sandberg is bringing to the upcoming film as well:
“I think often magic in the books can be connected to the darker stuff, like monsters, Swamp Thing, and Justice League Dark, and we’re really going to a different side of magic, to the actual origin source of magic, which is wonderful and colorful and mysterious.”
Johns also discussed why the magic of Shazam is so special to him and stands out in more ways than one through the story of Billy Batson:
“One of the best parts of Shazam, to me, that’s been in its legacy since the Marvel Family was introduced with Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr., is that there’s always been a family of superheroes. And that power comes from Billy, he shares it with his family, who he has a family bond with. And the whole point of Billy Batson’s journey, to me, is, family’s what you make it, not what you’re born with. And it’s about bond and not blood. And I think that was really important for us to continue in our Shazam! series, and although it focuses on Billy Batson, he’s our main character, the rest of the family and the supporting cast are within the book. And the book’s gonna be exploring, why does he have that ability, what does that mean? Who are these champions, and what are they champions of?”
We only have one teaser trailer to speculate from in regards to how Shazam will be portrayed onscreen. Perhaps we will soon see how the rest of the Marvel family will be portrayed when the film hits theaters next spring.
Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Djimon Honsou and Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana. Here’s the official synopsis:
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
Shazam! hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
