Marvel star Simu Liu recently opened up about the difficulties in balancing his own mental health with the super-stardom that followed his breakout role in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings.
Simu Liu was a relatively unknown actor when he became Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi, leading one of the biggest MCU origin stories to hit the big screen following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Endgame. Now the star has spoken out about the effects of his sudden rise to fame.
While Simu Liu makes no secret of his love for playing Shang-Chi and being a part of the MCU, the actor has also highlighted the importance of taking time to manage his own mental health.
Simu Liu On The Effects Of MCU Stardom
In an Instagram post marking the one-year anniversary of the release of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, Simu Liu shared a message on the importance of prioritizing mental health.
The actor acknowledged that skyrocketing to fame in the way he has done since Shang-Chi was released “also comes at a massive cost.” Liu said “I felt like I was riding the hell out of the learning curve, crushing all my talk show appearances and interviews, but I was also neglecting to spend the necessary time to check in with myself and prioritize my mental health.”
Simu Liu would go on to share his progress in working on his own mental health, saying:
“So today on the anniversary of the release of Shang-Chi I’m especially excited because I’m in therapy and prioritizing my health. I’m healing and well on my way to becoming something more than a superhero; I’m on my way to becoming a good and decent man.”

Simu Liu now has a busy MCU future mapped out ahead of him as Shang-Chi. While his future appearances are yet to be confirmed, fans are expecting to see the actor in a sequel to the first Shang-Chi, as well as in 2025’s two Avengers movies. Liu is also set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
