Variety reports S.J. Clarkson has signed on to direct a female-centric Spider-Man spinoff, possibly based on Marvel’s Madame Web for Sony Pictures.
According to insiders, the project is based on the Spider-Man character Madame Web, however, being that Madame Web doesn’t actually face off directly against any villains due to her age and suffering from myasthenia gravis, a long-term neuromuscular disease, it is said that this new project could turn into something else.
Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless were reportedly tapped to write a Spider-Man spinoff centered around Madame Web last September, however, this new project does not yet have any writers attached, nor an actress, however, the studio is looking to cast an A-list actor with a list that includes Charlize Theron and Amy Adams.
S.J. Clarkson is best known for directing episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders. She was also attached to direct Paramount’s Star Trek 4, however, that project has since been delayed due to pay disputes with the cast. Clarkson moved on to direct the pilot for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel and was ultimately replaced by Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley on the Star Trek project.
Next up for Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters is Jared Leto’s Morbius film which has been delayed until March 19, 2021, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Here is the official synopsis for Jared Leto’s Morbius:
One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.
Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.
