Snake Eyes was a failure of a reboot for the G.I. Joe franchise at Paramount. According to one of the film’s stars Andrew Koji, it was a doomed project from the start.
Snake Eyes was a reboot born out of the failed G.I Joe films from the 2010’s that took so long to come out that many fans likely didn’t even realize the film flopped at the box office over two years ago. The project was panned by fans and critics alike. According to Andrew Koji, who played the film’s villain Storm Shadow, it was destined to fail due to a lack of integrity:
“After this, it could just all be downhill for me,” Koji told Inverse. “But at least for now [my experience on Warrior] makes me go, OK, I’d like to do stuff with integrity. And G.I. Joe really wasn’t that, was it?…Hollywood is just obsessed with telling the same old thing over and again. Firstly, remakes. Secondly, it’s got to be based on IP. Third, it’s so absurd because I’m just like, hold on. People want originality. Where is it? What is going on here?”
The G.I. Joe series is certainly a symptom of a larger problem with Hollywood. While there is nothing fundamentally broken with a Snake Eyes film, many films based on popular IPs are made without any love, passion, or, as Andrew Koji points out, integrity. If studios want films based on IP to work, they need to combine them with original execution and a passion for the source material, not just pumping films out as fast as they can.
Will There Be A Snake Eyes Sequel?
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins flopped at the box office, earning only $40 million across its run. The film also received a dismal 35% with critics despite scoring a 74% with audiences. It’s unlikely for there to be a sequel to the film at this time.
The synopsis for Snake Eyes can be seen below:
“Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him.”
Directed by Robert Schwentke from a script written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, the film stars Henry Golding as the titular character, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Steven Allerick as Ninja Commando and Haruka Abe as Akiko. Takehiro Hira and Steven Allerick are also on board.
