Sonic the Hedgehog star Jim Carrey compared the villainous Dr. Robotnik to his version of the Riddler in Batman Forever.
When Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters next month, the titular hero will face off against his infamous adversary Dr. Robotnik. Portraying the classic Sonic villain is actor Jim Carrey, whose experience playing antagonists includes a turn as the Riddler in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever.
While Batman Forever was not well-received upon its release, some have compared Jim Carry’s manic performance as the Riddler favorably to Frank Gorshin’s portrayal of the evil genius. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Jim Carrey noted the similarities between Batman Forever‘s wild Riddler and his take on Dr. Robotnik:
“Well, I think I think they’re both basically spinning. They’re both spinning in the tree of knowledge. They’re leaping from branch to branch and falling occasionally. I wouldn’t put one against the other. I think they’d be a great team. But you know, it’s like Robotnik and every super villain basically comes from a place of neglect with a feeling of absolute worthlessness that manifests itself in in magnificent creations that are designed to control the world, put their brand on everybody, and maybe even get inside your bloodstream with some nanotechnology occasionally.”
The Riddler will soon return to the big screen in Matt Reeves’ The Batman with Paul Dano in the role. Details on what role the Ridler will play in The Batman are being closely guarded, though it can probably be safe to assume Paul Dano’s take on the character will be relatively more serious than Jim Carrey’s. Batman Forever was Jim Carrey’s sole outing as the Riddler.
