Welcome to the Sony-Verse!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Madame Web Sony

It seems Sony is taking another crack at making a Spider-Man hit! A new rumor suggests the studio is developing an R-rated project starring a fan-favorite Spider-Verse character.

Sony has had a long track record of trying (and failing) to make its Spider-Man movies work. With the success of the Spider-Verse film franchise, it seems they’re moving away from villains and into the multiverse, with a new rumor by scooper CanWeGetSomeToast suggesting that the studio is developing an R-Rated Spider-Man film. The folks at ComicBookMovie.com add that the movie may focus on the Spide-Verse breakout Hobart “Hobie” Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk.

This is one of many Spider-Verse properties that Sony has in development. The company is also developing projects with Silk, Madame Web, and Spider-Man: Noir. It’s unclear how or if the R-rated Spider-Punk film would tie into these other properties, though here’s to hoping they do Hobie Brown the justice he deserves!

The team behind Across The Spider-Verse

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham, Across The Spider-Verse also features the voice talents of Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jason Schwartzman, Rachel Dratch, Shea Whigham and Jorma Taccone. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg are producing the upcoming movie alongside Lord and Miller, who also worked on its predecessor.

The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse synopsis reads as follows:

“Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga… After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”
