Could Spider-Man 4 be bringing the character in a whole new direction? Marvel is reportedly eyeing a new director as it prepares to shoot the upcoming Tom Holland movie.
Spider-Man 4 is one of the most highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, potentially of all time. After the smash success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the studio took a break from the IP to assess where to go next with Peter Parker’s story. While details about Tom Holland’s next adventure are sparse, the project may begin filming sooner than fans expect.
According to a new report by insider Jeff Sneider, Marvel is hoping to start filming Spider-Man 4 sometime this fall, likely in September or October. Tom Holland is set to return as the titular web head, with Zendaya also expected to reprise her role as MJ in the MCU. There’s no word on if other supporting characters, like Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, will also return.
Spider-Man 4 Gets A New Director
Despite having a fantastic three-movie run in the MCU, Jon Watts isn’t expected to continue his trilogy with Spider-Man 4. While he was originally attached to The Fantastic Four, he ultimately left both projects, leaving Marvel in search of a new director to continue Tom Holland’s journey.
Jeff Sneider reports that one of the current frontrunners is Justin Lin, best known as being a prominent director of the Fast and Furious franchise and Star Trek Beyond. This would certainly ratchet up the action in Spider-Man 4, potentially teasing a grittier story for Tom Holland in the MCU.
However, this deal is far from cemented. Sony and Marvel are considering other directors to helm Spider-Man 4. One of the biggest names rumored to be in the running is Drew Goddard, best known for his projects The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. With the project set to start filming in just a few months, it’s likely a director will be chosen soon so pre-production can properly begin.
