‘Spider-Man 4’: How Close Anne Hathaway Actually Got To Playing Black Cat

A perfect match?

Anne Hathaway Black Cat Catwoman The Dark Knight Rises

Anne Hathaway was originally cast as Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s canceled Spider-Man 4. During a recent interview, the actress revealed how close she got to actually playing the character.

The tale of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 is one of the most tragic in comic book movie history. The film was originally set to feature Anne Hathaway as Black Cat and Bruce Campbell as Mysterio before the studio ultimately canned the project. When asked how close she got to playing the character before cancellation, Hathaway admitted they didn’t get far into production:

“Uh, I did not get into costume and did not read a script past the audition slides,” Hathaway confirmed during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I got the part and, yeah, it just…I think that’s probably more the producers’ story to tell than mine should they ever decide to tell it.”

The Spider-Man Universe has gone on to be so enormous and so thrilling,” she continued. “It’s just reinventing itself and all of those things so I wouldn’t want to make more of it than is necessary.”

It certainly would’ve been interesting to see Anne Hathaway as Black Cat, especially as she appeared as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises just a few years later. However, despite the endless Marvel projects released in the past two decades, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was never meant to be.

What’s next for Spider-Man?

What does the future hold for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker? The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home has opened up a world of possibilities for the fan-favorite Marvel character. The movie ends with Peter erasing himself from the memories of his loved ones in order to protect them from his enemies. This sets up an interesting dynamic for future Spider-Man movies, as Peter will have to navigate a world in which he is not known as Spider-Man.

Rumor has it that Tom Holland has signed on for multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The future of the Spider-Man series is currently unclear, but it is likely that Marvel will continue to explore the multiverse concept that was introduced in No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
