The Spider-Man: No Way Home writers revealed that Aunt May’s death almost happened in an entirely different location.

Tom Holland’s Spidey threequel succeeded on many different fronts, including nailing the farewell between Peter Parker and Aunt May. One of the most devastating moments in the film, the death of Aunt May saw the mother-figure succumbing to her wounds in Peter’s arms. May’s death eventually leads to the webhead attempting to put his rage aside and follow his aunt’s wish of curing the film’s many, many villains.

The death of Aunt May notably happened on the ground floor of Happy Hogan’s apartment building after she was struck by the Green Goblin’s glider. As perfect as a moment it was, it turns out that the key character’s death almost happened in a separate location. Speaking with Gold Derby, Spider-Man: No Way Home writer Erik Sommers teased the alternate version of the death scene.

“It was also tricky production-wise because we had different ideas for where the scene could take place, but because of COVID, we had one idea that it was going to be inside an ambulance and we had a whole version that was constructed around that, but that was not practical for shooting during COVID. So then that’s the kind of thing that happened, so then we had to move the scene physically to another place while trying to keep all the other elements working and we had to make adjustments. That’s the kind of thing that happens in production, and so it was, but I’m glad that it turned out the way it did and that people, I want to say that people started crying. I’m not glad that people started crying, but I’m glad it affected people the way we wanted, that it resonated because it’s so important to Peter’s story and to his journey. So I’m glad that people feel that it worked.”

Here is the synopsis for Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
