Spider-Man: No Way Home has confirmed that the MCU has a new Sorcerer Supreme.
Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
One of the key plot points of Spider-Man: No Way Home is that Peter Parker goes to Doctor Strange so the world doesn’t remember who Spidey is. Naturally, the spell goes kaput and the multiverse begins to open up, causing paramount chaos. Could the good doctor’s failure be because he’s no longer the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme?
Not exactly, but it is interesting that the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme is no longer Doctor Strange. In the film, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character reveals that he no longer holds the coveted title because he was snapped away. In the five year absence, Wong became the Sorcerer Supreme and still holds that title.
This doesn’t necessarily change anything for the MCU but it does expand upon Wong’s role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where he appears as a cameo. Not only does Wong fight the Abomination in the MCU film, but he essentially recruits Shang-Chi and Katy into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. It remains to be seen if upcoming MCU films give Doctor Strange the coveted title back or if Wong will just keep it. After all it, it is just a title.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
