Concept art from Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed that Mysterio was originally set to return for the epic film.
First appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio claimed to have been a warrior from another dimension, battling beings known as the Elementals. This was eventually revealed to be an elaborate lie, executed with hologram technology. As it turned out, Mysterio was a disgruntled former Stark Industries employee who was backed by other disgruntled members of Tony Stark’s company who were playing a long con game. Unfortunately for Mysterio, things did not work out as he hoped, and was killed in a final battle with Spider-Man. The villain, however, did manage to get the last laugh.
At the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Mysterio revealed Peter Parker’s identity to the entire world, making life far more difficult for him and his friends. Desperate, Parker went to Doctor Strange to make a spell that would cause everyone to forget that he was Spider-Man. Unfortunately, things went horribly wrong and a number of villains from the other Spider-Man films came into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting in an epic showdown between three versions of Spider-Man and the various antagonists at the Statue of Liberty. Now it appears that, at one point, Mysterio was part of that battle.
In a recently released piece of concept art, you can clearly see Mysterio at the Statue of Liberty. More interesting, however, is that he appears to be having some kind of duel with Doctor Strange. You can see the full image below:
