‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Is “Different” According To People Who Have Seen Rough Cut

Last JediThe Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer dropped earlier today at Star Wars Celebration Orlando and it’s gotten great praise from fans and critics alike. One of the most interesting things about The Last Jedi will definitely be Rian Johnson’s take on the franchise. Known for directing Brick, Looper, and three of the best episodes of Breaking Bad (Fly, Fifty-One, Ozymandias), Johnson has cemented himself as one of the most unique and visionary directors working today so it was no surprise when he was announced as a director for the eighth film in the Star Wars franchise, picking up from where J.J Abrams left off.

Thanks to Daisy Ridley and Erik Davis who recorded her response, we have an indication of what The Last Jedi will feel like.

“I’ve spoken to a number of people that have seen a rough cut and everyone’s like ‘It’s different, it’s different’.”

Later on in the video, she discusses how J.J Abrams paved the way for Johnson to do his own thing. You can check out the full video below.

Despite simply being rough cuts, this news bodes well as this proves that LucasFilm is letting these new films be a platform for directors and their unique voices.

Directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and newcomers to the franchise Kelly Marie Tran, Benicio del Toro, and Laura Dern.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas on December 15, 2017.

I don’t necessarily agree that a second hand account of some unnamed people saying “It’s different. It’s different.” proves that Lucas Film is letting these new films be a platform for directors and their unique voices. I know a lot of folks like Rogue One and all but it was hard to see/hear Gareth Edwards’ directorial voice over all the fan service. And I know I’m in the minority on Ep VII but that was more or less Ep IV all over again.

I understand that this was their way of rebooting the series for a new audience – and in this regard they were successful. At the same time, though, I was disappointed that after all that hype I got a movie I already saw. I mean, they even had an analogue for Porkins in the X Wing fight at the end. Because of the purpose Ep VII had to serve I’m holding out to see what they do with Ep VIII. But aside from some nice ocean vistas I’m still seeing a lot of the same stuff in this new trailer. And I’m not saying that anyone who liked Ep VII or Rogue One is dumb or anything. This is just my opinion.

“It’s different.” You know what that means. Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of the non-creative suits at Lucasfilm will bring in some Simon effing Kinberg to do “re-shoots” like how they screwed up Rogue One. Different means “scary unknown” to corporations. And that’s what Kennedy is, just a suit.
