The executive producers of Disney’s animated series Star Wars Resistance have officially confirmed that the characters Okra (Bobby Moynihan) and Flix (Jim Rash) are an openly gay couple.
Star Wars Resistance executive producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman appeared on the Coffee With Kenobi podcast to confirm that Okra and Flix are romantically involved, making them the first onscreen canonical gay couple in the franchise.
Justin Ridge confirmed Okra and Flix’s relationship in the following statement:
“I think it’s safe to say they’re an item, absolutely. They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that. We love Flix and Orka.”
In Star Wars Resistance, Okra and Flix are the dynamic duo that man the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus station.
The confirmation of Okra and Flix being a gay couple in Star Wars Resistance may be the first time LGBT representation was explicitly portrayed onscreen in the franchise, but multiple LGBT characters have existed in the newly-established canon ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The book Star Wars: Aftermath introduced Sinjir Rath Velus, one of the first openly gay characters in the franchise. Sinjir finds a boyfriend named Condyr in the book’s sequel, Aftermath: Life Debt.
