Steve Coogan’s ‘Joker 2’ Role Revealed After Trailer Appearance

Steve Coogan tells all!

Joker 2 Folie A Deux Steve Coogan Trailer DC Universe Cast role

Is Steve Coogan not who he seems to be in Joker 2? The actor speaks on his role in the project following his appearance in the film’s trailer.

Fans were shocked when the Joker 2 trailer dropped. While they were expecting a funhouse of madness, they certainly didn’t expect to see Alan Partridge actor Steve Coogan speaking to Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. The unexpected cameo left many to speculate what role he could play in the sequel. When asked, Coogan laid his cards bare regarding his role.

“Can I tell you more about it? I’m in it,” Coogan explained at the BAFTA TV Awards. “I have a very interesting scene with Joaquin Phoenix. I play a sort of a CNN-type reporter who interviews him in his cell. Beyond that, I don’t know. I’ve not seen it. I’m as in the dark as anyone else.”

Given how different Joker 2 is from most of its comic film counterparts, it’s not shocking that Steve Coogan isn’t secretly playing an obscure character who’ll face off against Joaquin Phoenix in a grey-brown suit. However, even if Coogan isn’t making his debut as a superhero, that doesn’t mean his description of his character in the trailer doesn’t reveal huge things about the film.

What Steve Coogan Reveals About Joker 2

The concept of a reporter interviewing Arthur Fleck during Joker 2 reveals quite a bit about the film’s setting. While the trailer already confirmed that the world knows of Joaquin Phoenix’s exploits as the character in the first film, the presence of a big-name reporter suggests that the world sees him as more than just a deranged lunatic.

People falling in love with a serial killer, both in a personal sense and a society’s obsession, is far from a concept original to Joker 2. Charismatic individuals from across the spectrum of depravity have repeatedly captured the minds of America, some even getting their own Netflix shows with actors like Evan Peters. It’ll be interesting to see how big of a role Steve Coogan and, in conjunction, those themes play in the sequel.
