‘Stranger Things’: Matt Duffer On Eleven’s Role In Season 2

Stranger Things Co-creator Matt Duffer dishes on the return of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her role next season when the adventure continues this fall.

This week, all of the kids from Stranger Things are featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s Fall TV Preview — including Millie Bobby Brown. The first season ended rather ominously after Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) sacrificed herself for her now friends, destroying the Demogorgon as she tore a hole through the fabric of space-time. But before it was all over, the series teased the return of Eleven when Chief Hopper (David Harbour) planted some Eggo waffles in a supply box outside in the woods somewhere in Hawkins.

After Brown was spotted back in Atlanta last Halloween while out trick or treating with the rest of the young cast just days before production began on the second season, Netflix officially announced Brown would be returning as Eleven rather than to try and keep her return a secret,  The question has now become: to what extent will Eleven play a role in the next adventure for the kids of Hawkins? The season two teaser revealed Eleven back in the upside down, as well as Mike’s basement but up until now, we haven’t been sure how big of a part the iconic character would have.

Co-creator and director Matt Duffer dished to EW that not only would Eleven be back for season two, but that her character plays a major role in the second season:

“I want people to know that she’s back and she’s a major part of the season and not know how or why. We do get into her story and backstory. We learn about where she came from and how she came into the world and the program that resulted in her.”

EW also had the chance to speak with Brown, who added the following:

“She has a storyline this season for her, and it’s an emotional transition. Last season I didn’t get to expand [on the character] — this season is giving me that opportunity.”

Brown’s presence in Atlanta at the start of production for season two signals Eleven could be back as soon as the first episode and we sure hope she is. But until the series returns, all we can do is be thankful that we won’t have to wait until the last episode of season two to see whether or not Eleven comes back.

The adventure continues in the fall of 1984 as the world is turning upside down. Season two of Stranger Things hits Netflix this Halloween.
