Are people yearning for the days of 2016’s Suicide Squad? David Ayer hopes that one day the power of nostalgia will bring his Ayer Cut to fruition.
The Ayer Cut of the Suicide Squad film sits at an odd place in the history of the DC Universe. For years, the IP was defined by a fight to bring Zack Snyder’s cut of the Justice League to life. And somehow, against all odds, the fans were able to stick it to the man and get the 4 hour film finished and released on Max.
However, that passion never extended to the lesser-known DC director’s cut: The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. Despite David Ayer having to deal with just as much studio meddling as Zack Snyder, there was never a coordinated push by fans to have his vision see the light of day. As such, the Ayer Cut has been lost in the vault, his original vision currently unseen by eyes other than himself, the cast, and crew.
Will The Ayer Cut Of Suicide Squad Ever Come Out?
Over the years, David Ayer has been off-and-on about whether he actually wants the Ayer Cut to see the light of days. Somedays he’s more confident than ever that the film will release with his full vision in-tact, others he throws up his hands ready to leave Suicide Squad in the rearview mirror. However, in the most recent press tour for his film A Working Man, the director seemed to have hope that nostalgia could bring his vision to life.
“When I did speak with James [Gunn], he wanted to [first] get some scores on the board,” Ayer told The Hollywood Reporter. “DC has its history and its legacy, and it’s taking some work to reestablish that IP and get it moving in the direction they want. So it’s absolutely fair for them to do that.”
“Maybe with enough time, it’ll be seen as a more nostalgic thing. But just for the sake of everybody that worked on [2016’s Suicide Squad], it really does deserve to be seen,” Ayer says. “So I absolutely understand what James is doing, and I think he’s going to have some real successes with the lanes he’s going down.”
Given how infamous 2016’s Suicide Squad has become with both hardcore fans and casual viewers, it’s not likely they’ll be a big nostalgic push for the film anytime soon. However, David Ayer’s words do suggest that the Ayer Cut may be on the table somewhere down the line once DC Studios finds their footing. And given the Snyder Cut found its way into the world, it’s very possible that fans could make a miracle happen twice.
